What are probiotics?

Probiotics are living microorganisms composed of healthy bacteria and yeast that live in the body. Most beneficial probiotics are found in the gut, but other good microbes may be found in the mouth, skin, lungs, urinary tract, and vagina. Good bacteria help maintain a healthy balance in the body and fight off harmful bacteria that cause illness.

What are the benefits of probiotics?

Probiotics promote gut and digestive health and support the immune system. A healthy microbiome is responsible for digestion, metabolism, and immune function. Poor diet, antibiotics, and diseases kill good gut bacteria, making it impossible for the body to absorb nutrients properly or regulate blood sugar. An unhealthy gut is a breeding ground for bacteria and pathogens, which can weaken the immune system. This imbalance may result in insulin resistance and increased inflammation, and can lead to chronic conditions such as obesity, heart disease, and diabetes.

Research shows that probiotics help to restore the gut microbiome. An increase of healthy gut bacteria may reduce the severity of digestive disorders, allergies, and skin irritations. Probiotics are often recommended to help:

  • Irritable Bowel Syndrome
  • Irritable Bowel Disease
  • Diarrhea
  • Constipation
  • Eczema (and other skin conditions)
  • Allergies
  • Urinary/vaginal health
  • Oral health
  • Common cold
  • Food intolerances
  • Depression, anxiety, and emotional health
  • Chronic fatigue

Should I take a probiotic?

Increasing the intake of good bacteria from a probiotic is a good idea for just about anyone. Supporting the gut microbiome is important for those who regularly consume a typical Western diet of processed foods, high amounts of fat and sugar, and insufficient fiber. Anyone with a severe illness or a compromised immune system should check with their healthcare provider before taking a probiotic.

Probiotics are found in fermented foods, drinks, and supplement forms. Probiotic-rich foods include yogurt, cheese, kefir, sour dill pickles, kimchi, kombucha, miso, natto, sauerkraut, tempeh, and brine-cured olives

Probiotic supplements are an easy way to feed the gut the necessary bacteria and yeast it needs to thrive daily. Research shows that 100 million to 1 billion probiotic live cultures must reach the intestines to experience health benefits. Probiotics+™ Veggie Capsules contain 40 billion active microorganisms to restore your gut flora and boost your overall health.
